Now through May 8, 2013, the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology (MFIT) in New York will host the ‘Fashion and Technology’ exhibition, which takes a close look at the relationship between glamour and innovation. 250 years of history are retold through 100 special garments, displayed in chronological order, which narrate the dynamic link between fashion and technology. The exhibition will highlight how this relationship has  helped the fashion industry progress and simplify manufacturing processes as well as open new doors in design.
The items on display at the exhibition, curated by Ariele Elia and Emma McClendon, range from a men's machine-sewn overcoat dating back to the late 1700’s, to a seamless dress by Pierre Cardin from 1968, and an evening dress by Thierry Mugler that combines 80's fashion and science fiction fantasy.
Some of these garments represent the most important

experiments of the twentieth century, including the insertion of rubber and plastic in fabrics. This is seen in a dress from 1937, made up of cellophane inserts sewn together with wool yarn and the all-in-one suit by Emilio Pucci in silk and helanca.
The final display in the exhibition is dedicated to contemporary trends.A cybernetic tracksuit by Jean Paul Gaultier and a unique piece from Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquière which blends innovative materials and production with the traditional techniques of French Haute Couture.
The examples of outstanding Italian design include the innovative down jacket known as ‘S Max Mara the Cube. The project began with the idea of a collection made of highly accessorized, personalized down jackets made in an exclusive fabric, packaged in a signature, cube-shaped box, creating a true design object. It involves an extremely functional “integrated system”,

which can be endlessly expanded and is climate –resistant.
The presence of ‘S Max Mara the Cube within the ‘Fashion and Technology’ exhibition is a distinguished acknowledgement which authenticates and confirms the originality and innovation of the project.
